Ch 9Verse 5
Adhyāya 9 Shloka 5

न च मत्स्थानि भूतानि पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम् | भूतभृन्न च भूतस्थो ममात्मा भूतभावनः || ५ ||

na ca mat-sthāni bhūtāni paśya me yogam aiśvaram | bhūta-bhṛn na ca bhūta-stho mamātmā bhūta-bhāvanaḥ || 5 ||

"And yet everything that is created does not rest in Me. Behold My mystic opulence! Although I am the maintainer of all living entities and although I am everywhere, I am not a part of this cosmic manifestation, for My Self is the very source of creation."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

In a brilliant paradox following the previous verse, Krishna now declares that all beings do not actually rest in Him (na ca mat-sthāni bhūtāni). He invites Arjuna to witness this incomprehensible, divine mystical power (paśya me yogam aiśvaram). He explains the ultimate contradiction: He is the sole sustainer and bearer of all living beings (bhūta-bhṛn), yet He is not situated within the material manifestation itself (na ca bhūta-stho). His supreme, independent Self is the foundational source and generator of all that exists (mamātmā bhūta-bhāvanaḥ).
