Ch 9Verse 4
Adhyāya 9 Shloka 4

मया ततमिदं सर्वं जगदव्यक्तमूर्तिना | मत्स्थानि सर्वभूतानि न चाहं तेष्ववस्थितः || ४ ||

mayā tatam idaṃ sarvaṃ jagad avyakta-mūrtinā | mat-sthāni sarva-bhūtāni na cāhaṃ teṣv avasthitaḥ || 4 ||

"By Me, in My unmanifested form, this entire universe is pervaded. All beings are in Me, but I am not in them."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna reveals His majestic relationship with the cosmos. He declares that this entire universe (idaṃ sarvaṃ jagad) is completely pervaded and saturated by Him (mayā tatam) in His invisible, unmanifested state (avyakta-mūrtinā). He explains the spatial and existential dynamic: all living beings and elements rest completely within Him (mat-sthāni sarva-bhūtāni), but He clarifies a vital distinction—He is not situated within them or limited by them (na cāhaṃ teṣv avasthitaḥ).
