Ch 9Verse 3
Adhyāya 9 Shloka 3

अश्रद्दधानाः पुरुषा धर्मस्यास्य परन्तप | अप्राप्य मां निवर्तन्ते मृत्युसंसारवर्त्मनि || ३ ||

aśraddadhānāḥ puruṣā dharmasyāsya paran-tapa | aprāpya māṃ nivartante mṛtyu-saṃsāra-vartmani || 3 ||

"Those who are not faithful in this devotional service cannot attain Me, O conqueror of enemies. Therefore they return to the path of birth and death in this material world."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna addresses Arjuna as 'Paran-tapa' (conqueror of enemies) and issues a stark warning. He states that individuals who lack faith and trust (aśraddadhānāḥ) in this specific path of supreme dharma (dharmasyāsya) simply cannot reach or attain Him (aprāpya māṃ). As a direct consequence of this disconnection, they are forced to return (nivartante) to the continuous, cyclical path of material existence, which is characterized by repeated birth and death (mṛtyu-saṃsāra-vartmani).
