Ch 9Verse 23
Adhyāya 9 Shloka 23

येऽप्यन्यदेवताभक्ता यजन्ते श्रद्धयान्विताः | तेऽपि मामेव कौन्तेय यजन्त्यविधिपूर्वकम् || २३ ||

ye 'py anya-devatā-bhaktā yajante śraddhayānvitāḥ | te 'pi mām eva kaunteya yajanty avidhi-pūrvakam || 23 ||

"Those who are devotees of other gods and who worship them with faith actually worship only Me, O son of Kunti, but they do so in a wrong way."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna addresses the worship of demigods or lesser cosmic administrators. He says that even those individuals (ye 'py) who are devoted to other gods (anya-devatā-bhaktā) and worship them endowed with genuine faith (yajante śraddhayānvitāḥ), are in actuality worshipping Him alone (te 'pi mām eva yajanty). However, O Kaunteya, they do so in a manner that is indirect, unauthorized, or contrary to the optimal regulative principles (avidhi-pūrvakam).
