Adhyāya 9 Shloka 20

trai-vidyā māṃ soma-pāḥ pūta-pāpā yajñair iṣṭvā svar-gatiṃ prārthayante | te puṇyam āsādya surendra-lokam aśnanti divyān divi deva-bhogān || 20 ||

"Those who study the Vedas and drink the soma juice, seeking the heavenly planets, worship Me indirectly. Purified of sinful reactions, they take birth on the pious, heavenly planet of Indra, where they enjoy godly delights."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna describes a different class of worshippers. The knowers of the three Vedas (trai-vidyā), who drink the sacrificial soma juice (soma-pāḥ) and thereby become cleansed of past sins (pūta-pāpā), worship Him through elaborate rituals (yajñair iṣṭvā). However, their motivation is specific: they pray for passage to the heavenly realms (svar-gatiṃ prārthayante). Because of their accumulated pious merit (puṇyam āsādya), they attain the celestial realm of Lord Indra (surendra-lokam), where they experience and enjoy (aśnanti) divine, heavenly pleasures (divyān divi deva-bhogān).
