Ch 9Verse 19
Adhyāya 9 Shloka 19

तपाम्यहमहं वर्षं निगृह्णाम्युत्सृजामि च | अमृतं चैव मृत्युश्च सदसच्चाहमर्जुन || १९ ||

tapāmy aham ahaṃ varṣaṃ nigṛhṇāmy utsṛjāmi ca | amṛtaṃ caiva mṛtyuś ca sad asac cāham arjuna || 19 ||

"O Arjuna, I give heat, and I withhold and send forth the rain. I am immortality, and I am also death personified. Both spirit and matter are in Me."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna continues to demonstrate His all-encompassing nature by reconciling extreme opposites. He states: I am the one who radiates heat (tapāmy aham), and I am the one who holds back (nigṛhṇāmi) as well as pours forth (utsṛjāmi) the rain (varṣaṃ). Furthermore, O Arjuna, I am both eternal immortality (amṛtaṃ) and inevitable death (mṛtyuś ca). I am the eternal, spiritual reality (sat), and I am also the temporary, material manifestation (asat).
