pitāham asya jagato mātā dhātā pitāmahaḥ | vedyaṃ pavitram oṅkāra ṛk sāma yajur eva ca || 17 ||

"I am the father of this universe, the mother, the support and the grandsire. I am the object of knowledge, the purifier and the syllable oṁ. I am also the Ṛg, the Sāma and the Yajur Vedas."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna makes an incredibly intimate and ultimate claim regarding His relationship with all living beings. He states: I am the father (pitā) of this entire universe (asya jagato), I am the mother (mātā), the sustainer/support (dhātā), and the grandfather (pitāmahaḥ). Furthermore, He is the ultimate object to be known (vedyaṃ), the supreme purifier (pavitram), the sacred seed syllable Om (oṅkāra), and the very essence of all scriptural knowledge—the Ṛg, Sāma, and Yajur Vedas.
