Adhyāya 9 Shloka 16

अहं क्रतुरहं यज्ञः स्वधाहमहमौषधम् | मन्त्रोऽहमहमेवाज्यमहमग्निरहं हुतम् || १६ ||

ahaṃ kratur ahaṃ yajñaḥ svadhāham aham auṣadham | mantro 'ham aham evājyam aham agnir ahaṃ hutam || 16 ||

"But it is I who am the ritual, I the sacrifice, the offering to the ancestors, the healing herb, the transcendental chant. I am the butter and the fire and the offering."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna systematically deconstructs the components of a Vedic sacrifice, identifying Himself as every single element. He declares: I am the Vedic ritual (kratuḥ), I am the sacrifice itself (yajñaḥ), I am the offering made to the ancestors (svadhā), and I am the healing herb or medicinal plant (auṣadham). Furthermore, I am the transcendental mantra chanted (mantraḥ), I am the clarified butter used as oblations (ājyam), I am the sacred fire (agniḥ), and I am the very act of offering into the fire (hutam).
