Ch 8Verse 4
Adhyāya 8 Shloka 4

अधिभूतं क्षरो भाव: पुरुषश्चाधिदैवतम् | अधियज्ञोऽहमेवात्र देहे देहभृतां वर || ४ ||

adhibhūtaṃ kṣaro bhāvaḥ puruṣaś cādhidaivatam | adhiyajño 'ham evātra dehe deha-bhṛtāṃ vara || 4 ||

"O best of the embodied beings, the physical nature, which is constantly changing, is called adhibhuta [the material manifestation]. The universal form of the Lord, which includes all the demigods, like those of the sun and moon, is called adhidaiva. And I, the Supreme Lord, represented as the Supersoul in the heart, am called adhiyajna [the Lord of sacrifice]."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna answers the remaining three questions. He defines: 1. The material manifestation or Adhibhūtam is simply the perishable, constantly mutating, physical nature of things (kṣaro bhāvaḥ). 2. The cosmic administration or Adhidaivatam is the Universal Form or the Supreme Cosmic Person (puruṣaś ca) who encompasses all demigods and celestial forces. 3. And finally, the Lord of Sacrifice or Adhiyajña is Me alone (aham eva), residing exactly here within this very physical body (atra dehe), O best of the embodied beings (deha-bhṛtāṃ vara).
