Ch 8Verse 3
Adhyāya 8 Shloka 3

श्रीभगवानुवाच | अक्षरं ब्रह्म परमं स्वभावोऽध्यात्ममुच्यते | भूतभावोद्भवकरो विसर्ग: कर्मसञ्ज्ञित: || ३ ||

śrī-bhagavān uvāca | akṣaraṃ brahma paramaṃ svabhāvo 'dhyātmam ucyate | bhūta-bhāvodbhava-karo visargaḥ karma-sañjñitaḥ || 3 ||

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: The indestructible, transcendental living entity is called Brahman, and his eternal nature is called adhyatma, the self. Action pertaining to the development of the material bodies of the living entities is called karma, or fruitive activities."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna answers Arjuna's first three questions with absolute, dictionary-level precision. He defines: 1. That which is utterly indestructible and supreme (akṣaraṃ paramaṃ) is called Brahman (brahma). 2. The essential, eternal nature or localized manifestation of that Brahman (svabhāvo) is called Adhyātma or the self (adhyātmam ucyate). 3. The creative action and generative force (visargaḥ) which brings about the material existence, development, and creation of all living entities (bhūta-bhāvodbhava-karo) is technically defined as Karma (karma-sañjñitaḥ).
