Krishna now describes the 'Path of Darkness' (Pitriyana) which leads to reincarnation. He states: The Yogi who departs during the presence of smoke (dhūmo), during the dark night (rātris), during the dark, waning fortnight of the moon (tathā kṛṣṇaḥ), and during the six months of the sun's southern course (ṣaṇ-māsā dakṣiṇāyanam)—departing under those conditions (tatra), that Yogi attains the celestial light of the moon (cāndramasaṃ jyotir prāpya), but inevitably returns and falls back to earthly rebirth (nivartate).
