"O best of the Bharatas, I shall now explain to you the different times at which, passing away from this world, the yogi does or does not come back."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna introduces the final, highly mystical topic of the chapter: the mechanics of the soul's departure. He says: But now (tu), O best of the Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), I shall speak of and explain to you (vakṣyāmi) that specific time and condition (taṃ kālaṃ) departing at which (yatra kāle prayātā), the Yogis (yoginaḥ) attain the state of non-return/liberation (anāvṛttim yānti), and conversely, the time departing at which they attain the state of return/reincarnation (āvṛttiṃ caiva).
