Adhyāya 8 Shloka 17

सहस्रयुगपर्यन्तमहर्यद्ब्रह्मणो विदु: | रात्रिं युगसहस्रान्तां तेऽहोरात्रविदो जना: || १७ ||

sahasra-yuga-paryantam ahar yad brahmaṇo viduḥ | rātriṃ yuga-sahasrāntāṃ te 'ho-rātra-vido janāḥ || 17 ||

"By human calculation, a thousand ages taken together form the duration of Brahma's one day. And such also is the duration of his night."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

To demonstrate just how 'temporary' the highest material realm is, Krishna gives the mind-bending mathematics of cosmic time. He explains: Those people who truly understand the scale of day and night (te 'ho-rātra-vido janāḥ) know (viduḥ) that a single day of Brahma, the cosmic architect (ahar yad brahmaṇo), lasts for an astonishing duration of one thousand Yugas or ages (sahasra-yuga-paryantam). And his single night (rātriṃ) similarly ends only after a duration of another one thousand ages (yuga-sahasrāntāṃ).
