Adhyāya 8 Shloka 11

yad akṣaraṃ veda-vido vadanti viśanti yad yatayo vīta-rāgāḥ | yad icchanto brahma-caryaṃ caranti tat te padaṃ saṅgraheṇa pravakṣye || 11 ||

"Persons who are learned in the Vedas, who utter omkara and who are great sages in the renounced order enter into Brahman. Desiring such perfection, one practices celibacy. I shall now briefly explain to you this process by which one may attain salvation."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna prepares Arjuna for the specific methodology of liberation. He says: That which the great knowers of the Vedas explicitly declare and describe as the Imperishable (yad akṣaraṃ veda-vido vadanti), and into which the great ascetics and strivers who are entirely freed from attachment enter (viśanti yad yatayo vīta-rāgāḥ). Furthermore, desiring to attain that state, those seekers practice the strict vow of Brahmacharya (yad icchanto brahma-caryaṃ caranti). That specific state and ultimate destination (tat te padaṃ), I shall now explain and declare to you briefly and in summary (saṅgraheṇa pravakṣye).
