Ch 7Verse 23
Adhyāya 7 Shloka 23

अन्तवत्तु फलं तेषां तद्भवत्यल्पमेधसाम् | देवान्देवयजो यान्ति मद्भक्ता यान्ति मामपि || २३ ||

antavat tu phalaṃ teṣāṃ tad bhavaty alpa-medhasām | devān deva-yajo yānti mad-bhaktā yānti mām api || 23 ||

"Men of small intelligence worship the demigods, and their fruits are limited and temporary. Those who worship the demigods go to the planets of the demigods, but My devotees ultimately reach My supreme planet."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna delivers the brutal economic reality of worshipping lesser things. He states: However (tu), the fruit, result, or reward obtained by those people (phalaṃ teṣāṃ tad) is strictly temporary and comes to an inevitable end (antavat). This happens to those of small, meager intelligence and limited understanding (bhavaty alpa-medhasām). The worshippers of demigods go to the realms of the demigods (devān deva-yajo yānti), but My devotees (mad-bhaktā) attain and come to Me, the eternal Supreme (yānti mām api).
