Ch 7Verse 20
Adhyāya 7 Shloka 20

कामैस्तैस्तैर्हृतज्ञाना: प्रपद्यन्तेऽन्यदेवता: | तं तं नियममास्थाय प्रकृत्या नियता: स्वया || २० ||

kāmais tais tair hṛta-jñānāḥ prapadyante 'nya-devatāḥ | taṃ taṃ niyamam āsthāya prakṛtyā niyatāḥ svayā || 20 ||

"Those whose intelligence has been stolen by material desires surrender unto demigods and follow the particular rules and regulations of worship according to their own natures."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna immediately contrasts the 'Mahātmā' (the Great Soul) of Verse 19 with the vast majority of humanity. He explains why people fail to reach the Supreme. Those whose wisdom, discrimination, and intelligence have been stolen, plundered, or carried away (hṛta-jñānāḥ) by various specific material cravings and desires (kāmais tais tair), surrender to and worship other, lesser gods or demigods (prapadyante 'nya-devatāḥ). In doing so, they adopt and follow various specific rules, rituals, and dogmas (taṃ taṃ niyamam āsthāya), driven entirely by the compulsions of their own conditioned, lower biological nature (prakṛtyā niyatāḥ svayā).
