bahūnāṃ janmanām ante jñānavān māṃ prapadyate | vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā su-durlabhaḥ || 19 ||

"After many births and deaths, he who is actually in knowledge surrenders unto Me, knowing Me to be the cause of all causes and all that is. Such a great soul is very rare."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is one of the most famous, climactic verses in the Bhagavad Gita. Krishna reveals the absolute endpoint of human evolution. He declares: At the very end of many, many births and lifetimes of searching (bahūnāṃ janmanām ante), the one who has acquired true, ultimate wisdom (jñānavān) completely surrenders and takes refuge in Me (māṃ prapadyate). What is the realization that triggers this final surrender? It is the staggering realization that 'Vasudeva (the Supreme Absolute) is literally everything' (vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti). Krishna concludes: Such a great, expansive soul (sa mahātmā) is extraordinarily, exceedingly rare (su-durlabhaḥ).
