Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna explicitly categorizes the seekers of the Divine. He says: O Arjuna, best of the Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), there are four types or categories (catur-vidhā) of virtuous and pious people (janāḥ sukṛtinaḥ) who worship and render service unto Me (bhajante māṃ). They are: 1. The distressed or suffering (ārto). 2. The seeker of worldly wealth and material gain (arthārthī). 3. The inquisitive and curious (jijñāsur). 4. The wise one who is situated in pure knowledge (jñānī ca).
