Ch 7Verse 13
Adhyāya 7 Shloka 13

त्रिभिर्गुणमयैर्भावैरेभि: सर्वमिदं जगत् | मोहितं नाभिजानाति मामेभ्य: परमव्ययम् || १३ ||

tribhir guṇa-mayair bhāvair ebhiḥ sarvam idaṃ jagat | mohitaṃ nābhijānāti mām ebhyaḥ param avyayam || 13 ||

"Deluded by the three modes [goodness, passion and ignorance], the whole world does not know Me, who am above the modes and inexhaustible."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna diagnoses the exact reason why humanity is suffering and blind to the truth. He declares: This entire world and all living beings (sarvam idaṃ jagat) are utterly deluded, hypnotized, and bewildered (mohitaṃ) by these three specific states of being (ebhiḥ bhāvaiḥ) which are composed entirely of the three Gunas/modes of nature (tribhir guṇa-mayair). Because they are hypnotized by this three-color matrix, the world does not recognize or know Me (nābhijānāti mām), who am situated completely above and beyond these modes (ebhyaḥ param), eternal and inexhaustible (avyayam).
