Ch 7Verse 12
Adhyāya 7 Shloka 12

ये चैव सात्त्विका भावा राजसास्तामसाश्च ये | मत्त एवेति तान्विद्धि न त्वहं तेषु ते मयि || १२ ||

ye caiva sāttvikā bhāvā rājasās tāmasāś ca ye | matta eveti tān viddhi na tv ahaṃ teṣu te mayi || 12 ||

"Know that all states of being—be they of goodness, passion or ignorance—are manifested by My energy. I am, in one sense, everything, but I am independent. I am not under the modes of material nature, for they, on the contrary, are within Me."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna introduces the fundamental mechanism of material psychology: the Three Gunas. He declares: Whatever states of existence there are—those of pure goodness and light (sāttvikā bhāvā), those of frantic passion and activity (rājasāḥ), and those of dark ignorance and lethargy (tāmasāś ca ye)—you must know that they all emanate and manifest exclusively from Me alone (matta eveti tān viddhi). However, I am not in them, nor am I under their control (na tv ahaṃ teṣu); rather, they exist within Me (te mayi).
