"For him who has conquered the mind, the mind is the best of friends; but for one who has failed to do so, his mind will remain the greatest enemy."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna explicitly defines the mechanism of the mind's duality mentioned in Verse 5. He states: The mind/self is a friend (bandhur ātmā) to that person by whom the mind has been conquered (yenātmaivātmanā jitaḥ). However (tu), for the person who has no control over the mind (anātmanaḥ), their own mind behaves with absolute hostility (śatrutve varteta), acting exactly like an external enemy (śatru-vat).
