Adhyāya 6 Shloka 7

जितात्मन: प्रशान्तस्य परमात्मा समाहित: | शीतोष्णसुखदु:खेषु तथा मानापमानयो: || ७ ||

jitātmanaḥ praśāntasya paramātmā samāhitaḥ | śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkheṣu tathā mānāpamānayoḥ || 7 ||

"For one who has conquered the mind, the Supersoul is already reached, for he has attained tranquility. To such a man happiness and distress, heat and cold, honor and dishonor are all the same."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna describes the immediate reward for the victory achieved in Verse 6. For the one who has actually conquered the mind (jitātmanaḥ) and achieved profound, unshakeable tranquility (praśāntasya), the Supreme Soul or Absolute is already reached and established within them (paramātmā samāhitaḥ). What does this state look like in the real world? This person maintains absolute equanimity in the face of physical dualities like heat and cold (śītoṣṇa), emotional dualities like joy and sorrow (sukha-duḥkheṣu), and—most difficult of all—social dualities like honor and dishonor (tathā mānāpamānayoḥ).
