Ch 6Verse 46
Adhyāya 6 Shloka 46

तपस्विभ्योऽधिको योगी ज्ञानिभ्योऽपि मतोधिक: | कर्मिभ्यश्चाधिको योगी तस्माद्योगी भवार्जुन || ४६ ||

tapasvibhyo 'dhiko yogī jñānibhyo 'pi mato 'dhikaḥ | karmibhyaś cādhiko yogī tasmād yogī bhavārjuna || 46 ||

"A yogi is greater than the ascetic, greater than the empiricist and greater than the fruitive worker. Therefore, O Arjuna, in all circumstances, be a yogi."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna delivers a definitive hierarchy of spiritual practitioners, placing the Yogi at the absolute summit. He states: The Yogi is superior and greater than the ascetic who performs severe physical austerities (tapasvibhyo 'dhiko yogī). The Yogi is also considered superior even to the empiricist or the philosopher of knowledge (jñānibhyo 'pi mato 'dhikaḥ). And the Yogi is certainly superior to the fruitive worker who acts for material rewards (karmibhyaś cādhiko yogī). Because the Yogi sits at the apex of all paths, Krishna issues his final, ringing command for the chapter: Therefore (tasmād), O Arjuna, become a Yogi! (yogī bhavārjuna).
