Aligning Consciousness

Ch 6Verse 44
Adhyāya 6 Shloka 44

पूर्वाभ्यासेन तेनैव ह्रियते ह्यवशोऽपि स: | जिज्ञासुरपि योगस्य शब्दब्रह्मातिवर्तते || ४४ ||

pūrvābhyāsena tenaiva hriyate hy avaśo 'pi saḥ | jijñāsur api yogasya śabda-brahmātivartate || 44 ||

"By virtue of the divine consciousness of his previous life, he automatically becomes attracted to the yogic principles—even without seeking them. Such an inquisitive transcendentalist stands always above the ritualistic principles of the scriptures."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna reveals the terrifying, beautiful gravity of past Karma. Because of that exact intense practice and habit cultivated in their previous life (pūrvābhyāsena tenaiva), this soul is forcefully dragged and attracted back to the spiritual path (hriyate), even if they initially try to resist it or act helplessly against it (hy avaśo 'pi saḥ). Even a person who is merely inquisitive about this Yoga (jijñāsur api yogasya) automatically transcends and surpasses the mechanical, ritualistic rules of the Vedas (śabda-brahmātivartate).
