Ch 6Verse 42
Adhyāya 6 Shloka 42

अथवा योगिनामेव कुले भवति धीमताम् | एतद्धि दुर्लभतरं लोके जन्म यदीदृशम् || ४२ ||

athavā yoginām eva kule bhavati dhīmatām | etad dhi durlabha-taraṃ loke janma yad īdṛśam || 42 ||

"Or [if unsuccessful after long practice of yoga] he takes his birth in a family of transcendentalists who are surely great in wisdom. Certainly, such a birth is rare in this world."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna offers a second, even higher possibility for the reincarnating Yogi (specifically one who advanced very far before failing). Or else (athavā), they take birth directly in the family or lineage of great Yogis (yoginām eva kule bhavati) who are endowed with profound, brilliant wisdom (dhīmatām). Krishna notes the extreme statistical rarity of this: Certainly, a birth of this exact kind (janma yad īdṛśam) is extraordinarily rare and incredibly difficult to obtain (etad dhi durlabha-taraṃ) in this material world (loke).
