Ch 6Verse 4
Adhyāya 6 Shloka 4

यदा हि नेन्द्रियार्थेषु न कर्मस्वनुषज्जते | सर्वसङ्कल्पसन्न्यासी योगारूढस्तदोच्यते || ४ ||

yadā hi nendriyārtheṣu na karmasv anuṣajjate | sarva-saṅkalpa-sannyāsī yogārūḍhas tadocyate || 4 ||

"A person is said to be elevated in yoga when, having renounced all material desires, he neither acts for sense gratification nor engages in fruitive activities."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna explicitly defines the exact criteria for reaching the summit mentioned in Verse 3. He declares: When a person (yadā hi) is no longer attached or clinging to the objects of the senses (nendriyārtheṣu), and is no longer attached to worldly actions and their fruits (na karmasv anuṣajjate). Furthermore, when that person has completely renounced all selfish, calculating desires and plotting (sarva-saṅkalpa-sannyāsī). It is exactly then (tadocyate) that a person is declared to be 'Yogārūḍha' (elevated and firmly established on the summit of Yoga).
