Adhyāya 6 Shloka 3

आरुरुक्षोर्मुनेर्योगं कर्म कारणमुच्यते | योगारूढस्य तस्यैव शम: कारणमुच्यते || ३ ||

ārurukṣor muner yogaṃ karma kāraṇam ucyate | yogārūḍhasya tasyaiva śamaḥ kāraṇam ucyate || 3 ||

"For one who is a neophyte in the eightfold yoga system, work is said to be the means; and for one who is already elevated in yoga, cessation of all material activities is said to be the means."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna provides a brilliant developmental roadmap for the spiritual practitioner. For the neophyte sage who is just beginning to climb the ladder of Yoga (ārurukṣor muner), active physical work and duty (karma) is declared to be the cause, instrument, or means (kāraṇam ucyate). However, for that exact same person, once they have successfully climbed and become elevated and established in Yoga (yogārūḍhasya tasyaiva), total serenity, stillness, and the cessation of disturbance (śamaḥ) is declared to be the means (kāraṇam ucyate) to progress further.
