Ch 6Verse 2
Adhyāya 6 Shloka 2

यं सन्न्यासमिति प्राहुर्योगं तं विद्धि पाण्डव | न ह्यसन्न्यस्तसङ्कल्पो योगी भवति कश्चन || २ ||

yaṃ sannyāsam iti prāhur yogaṃ taṃ viddhi pāṇḍava | na hy asannyasta-saṅkalpo yogī bhavati kaścana || 2 ||

"What is called renunciation you should know to be the same as yoga, or linking oneself with the Supreme, O son of Pandu, for one can never become a yogi unless he renounces the desire for sense gratification."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna permanently welds the two concepts together. He says: That which the wise declare to be Sannyasa or renunciation (yaṃ sannyāsam iti prāhuḥ), you must know that to be the exact same thing as Yoga (yogaṃ taṃ viddhi pāṇḍava). Why? He provides the absolute prerequisite: No person can ever become a true Yogi (na hi yogī bhavati kaścana) without first completely renouncing their selfish, calculating desires (asannyasta-saṅkalpo).
