Ch 6Verse 1
Adhyāya 6 Shloka 1

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: One who is unattached to the fruits of his work and who works as he is obligated is in the renounced order of life, and he is the true mystic, not he who lights no fire and performs no duty."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Chapter 6 opens with Krishna completely redefining the traditional image of a monk or mystic. He declares: A person who performs their obligated or required duty (kāryaṃ karma karoti yaḥ) while remaining completely independent of and unattached to the fruit of that action (anāśritaḥ karma-phalaṃ) is the true renunciate (sa sannyāsī) and the true mystic (ca yogī). It is absolutely not (na) the person who refuses to light the sacred fire (niragnir) or the person who performs no physical activities (na cākriyaḥ).
