Ch 6Verse 37
Adhyāya 6 Shloka 37

अर्जुन उवाच | अयति: श्रद्धयोपेतो योगाच्चलितमानस: | अप्राप्य योगसंसिद्धिं कां गतिं कृष्ण गच्छति || ३७ ||

arjuna uvāca | ayatiḥ śraddhayopeto yogāc calita-mānasaḥ | aprāpya yoga-saṃsiddhiṃ kāṃ gatiṃ kṛṣṇa gacchati || 37 ||

"Arjuna said: O Krishna, what is the destination of the unsuccessful transcendentalist, who in the beginning takes to the process of yoga with faith but who later desists due to worldly-mindedness and thus does not attain perfection in mysticism?"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Hearing Krishna's strict requirements for success, Arjuna asks a deeply anxious, pragmatic question. He says: O Krishna, consider a person who possesses genuine faith (śraddhayopeto) but who ultimately lacks the relentless discipline and effort required (ayatiḥ). Because their mind inevitably wanders and falls away from the practice of Yoga (yogāc calita-mānasaḥ), they fail to achieve the ultimate perfection and summit of Yoga (aprāpya yoga-saṃsiddhiṃ). What exact destination or fate (kāṃ gatiṃ) does that person meet (gacchati)?
