Ch 6Verse 36
Adhyāya 6 Shloka 36

असंयतात्मना योगो दुष्प्राप इति मे मति: | वश्यात्मना तु यतता शक्योऽवाप्तुमुपायत: || ३६ ||

asaṃyatātmanā yogo duṣprāpa iti me matiḥ | vaśyātmanā tu yatatā śakyo 'vāptum upāyataḥ || 36 ||

"For one whose mind is unbridled, self-realization is difficult work. But he whose mind is controlled and who strives by appropriate means is assured of success. That is My judgment."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna concludes his thoughts on mental control before Arjuna interrupts. He states: It is My firm opinion and judgment (me matiḥ) that Yoga is incredibly difficult to achieve (duṣprāpa) for a person whose mind is unbridled and unregulated (asaṃyatātmanā). However (tu), for the person whose mind is brought under control (vaśyātmanā), and who continually strives and endeavors (yatatā), it is absolutely possible to attain (śakyo 'vāptum) through the proper, appropriate means (upāyataḥ).
