Ch 6Verse 33
Adhyāya 6 Shloka 33

अर्जुन उवाच | योऽयं योगस्त्वया प्रोक्त: साम्येन मधुसूदन | एतस्याहं न पश्यामि चञ्चलत्वात्स्थितिं स्थिराम् || ३३ ||

arjuna uvāca | yo 'yaṃ yogas tvayā proktaḥ sāmyena madhusūdana | etasyāhaṃ na paśyāmi cañcalatvāt sthitiṃ sthirām || 33 ||

"Arjuna said: O Madhusudana, the system of yoga which You have summarized appears impractical and unendurable to me, for the mind is restless and unsteady."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna breaks his silence and interrupts Krishna's lofty philosophical exposition with a dose of brutal, pragmatic reality. He says: O Krishna (madhusūdana), this system of Yoga that has just been described and declared by You (yo 'yaṃ yogas tvayā proktaḥ), which is characterized by absolute equanimity and sameness (sāmyena). I simply do not see how it is possible (etasyāhaṃ na paśyāmi). Why? Because of the inherent restlessness and agitation of the mind (cañcalatvāt), I do not see how this state can have any enduring or steady continuation (sthitiṃ sthirām).
