Ch 6Verse 25
Adhyāya 6 Shloka 25

शनै: शनैरुपरमेद्बुद्ध्या धृतिगृहीतया | आत्मसंस्थं मन: कृत्वा न किञ्चिदपि चिन्तयेत् || २५ ||

śanaiḥ śanair uparamed buddhyā dhṛti-gṛhītayā | ātma-saṃsthaṃ manaḥ kṛtvā na kiñcid api cintayet || 25 ||

"Gradually, step by step, one should become situated in trance by means of intelligence sustained by full conviction, and thus the mind should be fixed on the self alone and should think of nothing else."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna delivers the final, remarkably gentle instruction for anchoring the mind. Having locked down the senses in Verse 24, he says: Gradually, step by step, inch by inch (śanaiḥ śanaiḥ), one must withdraw the mind and bring it to complete rest (uparamet). This is done using the higher intellect (buddhyā), which must be tightly gripped and sustained by immense patience and conviction (dhṛti-gṛhītayā). By actively placing and fixing the mind completely within the Self (ātma-saṃsthaṃ manaḥ kṛtvā), the Yogi reaches the final directive: you must not think of absolutely anything else whatsoever (na kiñcid api cintayet).
