Adhyāya 6 Shloka 23

तं विद्याद् दु:खसंयोगवियोगं योगसञ्ज्ञितम् | स निश्चयेन योक्तव्यो योगोऽनिर्विण्णचेतसा || २३ ||

taṃ vidyād duḥkha-saṃyoga-viyogaṃ yoga-sañjñitam | sa niścayena yoktavyo yogo 'nirviṇṇa-cetasā || 23 ||

"This indeed is to be known as Yoga - the severance from the union with pain. This yoga should be practiced with determination and an undeviating mind."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna delivers one of the most brilliant, clinical definitions of Yoga in the entire text. He says: You must know and understand (taṃ vidyād) that this specific state—the absolute severance and disconnection from the union with pain and sorrow (duḥkha-saṃyoga-viyogaṃ)—is what is truly known by the name of 'Yoga' (yoga-sañjñitam). Furthermore, this Yoga must be practiced and engaged in (sa yoktavyo) with absolute, resolute determination (niścayena) and with a mind that is unwearied, un-depressed, and refuses to quit (anirviṇṇa-cetasā).
