Ch 6Verse 20
Adhyāya 6 Shloka 20

यत्रोपरमते चित्तं निरुद्धं योगसेवया | यत्र चैवात्मनात्मानं पश्यन्नात्मनि तुष्यति || २० ||

yatroparamate cittaṃ niruddhaṃ yoga-sevayā | yatra caivātmanātmānaṃ paśyann ātmani tuṣyati || 20 ||

"In the stage of perfection called trance, or samadhi, one's mind is completely restrained from material mental activities by practice of yoga. This perfection is characterized by one's ability to see the self by the pure mind and to relish and rejoice in the self."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This verse marks the entrance into the ultimate state of Samadhi (which continues into verses 21-23). Krishna describes the exact moment of breakthrough. That state wherein (yatra) the mind completely ceases its movements and rejoices in stillness (uparamate cittaṃ), having been thoroughly restrained and disciplined by the relentless practice of Yoga (niruddhaṃ yoga-sevayā). And that state wherein (yatra ca eva) one sees and perceives the Self (ātmānaṃ paśyan) solely by means of the pure mind/Self (ātmanā), and finds absolute, overflowing satisfaction exclusively within the Self (ātmani tuṣyati).
