Ch 6Verse 18
Adhyāya 6 Shloka 18

यदा विनियतं चित्तमात्मन्येवावतिष्ठते | नि:स्पृह: सर्वकामेभ्यो युक्त इत्युच्यते तदा || १८ ||

yadā viniyataṃ cittam ātmany evāvatiṣṭhate | nispṛhaḥ sarva-kāmebhyo yukta ity ucyate tadā || 18 ||

"When the yogi, by practice of yoga, disciplines his mental activities and becomes situated in transcendence—devoid of all material desires—he is said to be well established in yoga."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna defines the exact internal state of someone who has perfected the regulations of the previous verses. When the mind is completely disciplined, restrained, and brought under absolute control (yadā viniyataṃ cittam), it becomes situated and rests exclusively in the Self alone (ātmany eva avatiṣṭhate). In this state, the Yogi is entirely free from craving and is devoid of all yearning for any material desires (nispṛhaḥ sarva-kāmebhyo). It is at that precise moment (tadā) that the person is declared to be 'Yukta'—perfectly yoked, united, and liberated (yukta ity ucyate).
