"Because while speaking, evacuating, receiving, or opening or closing his eyes, he always knows that only the material senses are engaged with their objects and that he is aloof from them."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Continuing the unbroken thought from Verse 8, Krishna adds five more verbs to the catalog of actions. The Yogi holds this realization even while speaking (pralapan), evacuating or letting go (visṛjan), grasping or receiving (gṛhṇann), and even in the micro-movements of opening (unmiṣan) and closing (nimiṣann api) the eyes. Throughout all of this, the Yogi holds the absolute, unwavering conviction (iti dhārayan): 'It is merely the senses interacting with their respective sense objects' (indriyāṇīndriyārtheṣu vartanta).
