Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna provides an astonishingly detailed breakdown of human biology to prove a point. He says that the true knower of truth (tattva-vit), who is perfectly yoked to the Divine (yukto), must always think and realize (manyeta): 'I am not doing anything at all' (naiva kiñcit karomīti). This holds true even while they are actively seeing (paśyañ), hearing (śṛṇvan), touching (spṛśañ), smelling (jighrann), eating (aśnan), walking (gacchan), sleeping (svapan), or breathing (śvasan). [Note: The sentence continues into Verse 9].
