Ch 5Verse 10
Adhyāya 5 Shloka 10

"One who performs his duty without attachment, surrendering the results unto the Supreme Lord, is unaffected by sinful action, as the lotus leaf is untouched by water."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna delivers one of the most famous and beautiful metaphors in the entire Gita. He states the formula: A person who performs all their actions (karmāṇi karoti yaḥ) while dedicating and placing them entirely in the Supreme Absolute (brahmaṇy ādhāya), having completely abandoned all selfish attachment (saṅgaṃ tyaktvā). What happens to this person? They are never stained, touched, or entangled by sin or karmic reaction (lipyate na sa pāpena). How? Just as a lotus leaf is never touched or moistened by the water it sits in (padma-patram ivāmbhasā).
