Adhyāya 5 Shloka 11

कायेन मनसा बुद्ध्या केवलैरिन्द्रियैरपि | योगिन: कर्म कुर्वन्ति सङ्गं त्यक्त्वात्मशुद्धये || ११ ||

kāyena manasā buddhyā kevalair indriyair api | yoginaḥ karma kurvanti saṅgaṃ tyaktvātma-śuddhaye || 11 ||

"The yogis, abandoning attachment, act with body, mind, intelligence and even with the senses, only for the purpose of purification."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna details the precise methodology of the active Yogi. He lists the instruments of action: the physical body (kāyena), the mind (manasā), the intellect (buddhyā), and even the raw senses (kevalair indriyair api). The Yogis perform their actions (yoginaḥ karma kurvanti) using all of these instruments, but they do so having completely abandoned attachment (saṅgaṃ tyaktvā). Why do they act? Krishna gives the singular, exclusive reason: strictly for the purification of the self (ātma-śuddhaye).
