Ch 5Verse 12
Adhyāya 5 Shloka 12

युक्त: कर्मफलं त्यक्त्वा शान्तिमाप्नोति नैष्ठिकीम् | अयुक्त: कामकारेण फले सक्तो निबध्यते || १२ ||

yuktaḥ karma-phalaṃ tyaktvā śāntim āpnoti naiṣṭhikīm | ayuktaḥ kāma-kāreṇa phale sakto nibadhyate || 12 ||

"The steadily devoted soul attains unadulterated peace because he offers the result of all activities to Me; whereas a person who is not in union with the Divine, who is greedy for the fruits of his labor, becomes entangled."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna draws a sharp, binary contrast between two types of people. The first is the 'Yuktaḥ' (the connected/yoked one). By abandoning the fruits of their actions (karma-phalaṃ tyaktvā), this person attains the ultimate, supreme, unadulterated peace (śāntim āpnoti naiṣṭhikīm). The second is the 'Ayuktaḥ' (the disconnected/unyoked one). Driven purely by lust and impulsive desire (kāma-kāreṇa), they are deeply attached to the fruit of their labor (phale sakto), and as a direct result, they become thoroughly entangled and bound (nibadhyate).
