Ch 5Verse 4
Adhyāya 5 Shloka 4

साङ्ख्ययोगौ पृथग्बाला: प्रवदन्ति न पण्डिता: | एकमप्यास्थित: सम्यगुभयोर्विन्दते फलम् || ४ ||

sāṅkhya-yogau pṛthag bālāḥ pravadanti na paṇḍitāḥ | ekam apy āsthitaḥ samyag ubhayor vindate phalam || 4 ||

"Only the ignorant speak of devotional service [karma-yoga] as being different from the analytical study of the material world [Sankhya]. Those who are actually learned say that he who applies himself well to one of these paths achieves the results of both."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna attacks the false intellectual divide that plagues seekers. He states: It is only children or the ignorant (bālāḥ) who speak of Sankhya (the path of renunciation/philosophical analysis) and Yoga (the path of action) as completely separate and distinct (pṛthak pravadanti). The truly wise scholars do not say this (na paṇḍitāḥ). In truth, a person who applies themselves perfectly and completely (samyag āsthitaḥ) to even one of these paths (ekam api) attains the ultimate fruit or result of both (ubhayor vindate phalam).
