Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna completes the portrait of the liberated soul by describing their relationship to society. He states that the holy sages and seers (ṛṣayaḥ) attain the ultimate liberation of Brahman (labhante brahma-nirvāṇam). What are their qualifications? Their sins and toxic karma are completely destroyed (kṣīṇa-kalmaṣāḥ). Their doubts and dualities have been violently slashed and removed (chinna-dvaidhā). Their minds and senses are perfectly disciplined (yatātmānaḥ). Most importantly, they are constantly, actively engaged and rejoicing in the welfare of all living beings (sarva-bhūta-hite ratāḥ).
