Ch 5Verse 21
Adhyāya 5 Shloka 21

बाह्यस्पर्शेष्वसक्तात्मा विन्दत्यात्मनि यत्सुखम् | स ब्रह्मयोगयुक्तात्मा सुखमक्षयमश्नुते || २१ ||

bāhya-sparśeṣv asaktātmā vindaty ātmani yat sukham | sa brahma-yoga-yuktātmā sukham akṣayam aśnute || 21 ||

"Such a liberated person is not attracted to material sense pleasure but is always in trance, enjoying the pleasure within. In this way the self-realized person enjoys unlimited happiness, for he concentrates on the Supreme."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna defines the source of the Yogi's profound peace. This person's mind and soul are completely unattached to external, material contacts (bāhya-sparśeṣv asaktātmā). Because they have cut the external cord, they discover and experience the happiness that exists purely within the Self (vindaty ātmani yat sukham). Having their soul firmly yoked to the Absolute through Yoga (sa brahma-yoga-yuktātmā), they enjoy a happiness that is imperishable, unlimited, and never decays (sukham akṣayam aśnute).
