Ch 5Verse 20
Adhyāya 5 Shloka 20

न प्रहृष्येत्प्रियं प्राप्य नोद्विजेत्प्राप्य चाप्रियम् | स्थिरबुद्धिरसम्मूढो ब्रह्मविद् ब्रह्मणि स्थित: || २० ||

na prahṛṣyet priyaṃ prāpya nodvijet prāpya cāpriyam | sthira-buddhir asammūḍho brahma-vid brahmaṇi sthitaḥ || 20 ||

"A person who neither rejoices upon achieving something pleasant nor laments upon obtaining something unpleasant, who is self-intelligent, unbewildered, and who knows the science of God, is to be understood as already situated in transcendence."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna provides the exact behavioral diagnostic test to determine if someone has achieved the state described in Verse 19. The master does not wildly rejoice or exult (na prahṛṣyet) upon receiving something pleasant or favorable (priyaṃ prāpya). Conversely, they do not become agitated, depressed, or disturbed (nodvijet) upon receiving something unpleasant or unfavorable (prāpya cāpriyam). Their intellect is unshakably steady and locked (sthira-buddhir), entirely free from delusion (asammūḍho). Because they truly know the Absolute (brahma-vid), they are permanently situated in the Absolute (brahmaṇi sthitaḥ).
