Ch 5Verse 2
Adhyāya 5 Shloka 2

श्रीभगवानुवाच | सन्न्यास: कर्मयोगश्च नि:श्रेयसकरावुभौ | तयोस्तु कर्मसन्न्यासात्कर्मयोगो विशिष्यते || २ ||

śrī-bhagavān uvāca | sannyāsaḥ karma-yogaś ca niḥśreyasa-karāv ubhau | tayos tu karma-sannyāsāt karma-yogo viśiṣyate || 2 ||

"The Personality of Godhead replied: The renunciation of work and work in devotion are both good for liberation. But, of the two, work in devotional service is better than renunciation of work."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna immediately answers Arjuna's demand for a definitive choice. He begins by validating both paths: Both the renunciation of action (sannyāsaḥ) and the Yoga of action (karma-yogaś ca) lead to the ultimate supreme good and liberation (niḥśreyasa-karāv ubhau). However (tu), between those two (tayoḥ), the Yoga of action (karma-yogo) is definitively superior or more distinguished (viśiṣyate) than the mere renunciation of action (karma-sannyāsāt).
