Ch 5Verse 1
Adhyāya 5 Shloka 1

अर्जुन उवाच | सन्न्यासं कर्मणां कृष्ण पुनर्योगं च शंससि | यच्छ्रेय एतयोरेकं तन्मे ब्रूहि सुनिश्चितम् || १ ||

arjuna uvāca | sannyāsaṃ karmaṇāṃ kṛṣṇa punar yogaṃ ca śaṃsasi | yac chreya etayor ekaṃ tan me brūhi suniścitam || 1 ||

"Arjuna said: O Krishna, first of all You ask me to renounce work, and then again You recommend work with devotion. Now will You kindly tell me definitively which of the two is more beneficial?"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Chapter 5 opens with Arjuna expressing renewed confusion over Krishna's seeming contradictions. He addresses Krishna, saying: First you praise the renunciation of actions (sannyāsaṃ karmaṇāṃ kṛṣṇa), and then again (punar) you praise the Yoga of action (yogaṃ ca śaṃsasi). Arjuna demands a binary answer: Tell me definitively (tan me brūhi suniścitam) which one of these two (etayor ekaṃ) is actually the most beneficial or superior (yac chreya).
