Ch 5Verse 18
Adhyāya 5 Shloka 18

विद्याविनयसम्पन्ने ब्राह्मणे गवि हस्तिनि | शुनि चैव श्वपाके च पण्डिता: समदर्शिन: || १८ ||

vidyā-vinaya-sampanne brāhmaṇe gavi hastini | śuni caiva śva-pāke ca paṇḍitāḥ sama-darśinaḥ || 18 ||

"The humble sages, by virtue of true knowledge, see with equal vision a learned and gentle brahmana, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater [outcaste]."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is one of the most culturally revolutionary verses in human history. Krishna defines the vision of the true master. The wise sages (paṇḍitāḥ) look at a Brahmana (priest/scholar) who is fully endowed with learning and gentle humility (vidyā-vinaya-sampanne), a cow (gavi), an elephant (hastini), a dog (śuni), and a dog-eater or outcaste (śva-pāke ca). When the master looks at these wildly different beings, they see them with absolute, equal vision (sama-darśinaḥ).
