Ch 5Verse 17
Adhyāya 5 Shloka 17

तद्बुद्धयस्तदात्मानस्तन्निष्ठास्तत्परायणा: | गच्छन्त्यपुनरावृत्तिं ज्ञाननिर्धूतकल्मषा: || १७ ||

tad-buddhayas tad-ātmānas tan-niṣṭhās tat-parāyaṇāḥ | gacchanty apunar-āvṛttiṃ jñāna-nirdhūta-kalmaṣāḥ || 17 ||

"When one's intelligence, mind, faith and refuge are all fixed in the Supreme, then one becomes fully cleansed of misgivings through complete knowledge and thus proceeds straight on the path of liberation."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna describes the absolute, laser-like focus of a person bathed in the light of the Sun from Verse 16. He outlines four vectors of alignment: Their intellect is totally directed toward That Supreme (tad-buddhayaḥ). Their mind and core identity are absorbed in That (tad-ātmānaḥ). Their steady faith and discipline are anchored in That (tan-niṣṭhāḥ). Their ultimate refuge and highest goal is exclusively That (tat-parāyaṇāḥ). Because their impurities and sins are completely washed away by this knowledge (jñāna-nirdhūta-kalmaṣāḥ), they go to the state of no return (gacchanty apunar-āvṛttiṃ).
