Ch 5Verse 15
Adhyāya 5 Shloka 15

नादत्ते कस्यचित्पापं न चैव सुकृतं विभु: | अज्ञानेनावृतं ज्ञानं तेन मुह्यन्ति जन्तव: || १५ ||

nādatte kasyacit pāpaṃ na caiva sukṛtaṃ vibhuḥ | ajñānenāvṛtaṃ jñānaṃ tena muhyanti jantavaḥ || 15 ||

"Nor does the Supreme Lord assume anyone's sinful or pious activities. Embodied beings, however, are bewildered because of the ignorance which covers their real knowledge."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna expands the absolute neutrality from the localized Soul (Verse 14) to the Supreme Absolute itself. He declares: The all-pervading Supreme Lord (vibhuḥ) does absolutely not accept or take on (nādatte) anyone's sins or toxic actions (kasyacit pāpaṃ), nor does He accept anyone's pious, good deeds or merits (na caiva sukṛtaṃ). The Supreme is entirely neutral. Why, then, do humans blame God for their suffering? Krishna explains: True knowledge is completely covered and suffocated by ignorance (ajñānenāvṛtaṃ jñānaṃ). It is solely by this dark ignorance that all living entities are deeply bewildered and deluded (tena muhyanti jantavaḥ).
